FOUNDER

DeShuna E. Spencer

Publisher/CEO

Frustrated with seeing some magazines publish the same celebrity-focused, gossip-driven news and fed up with not having books, films and magazines strictly focusing on tough, relevant news to Blacks in the U.S. and globally, DeShuna Spencer was driven to start Liu Karama Products LLC in 2007. Since the landmark decision of Brown vs. Board of Education more than 53 years ago, African Americans have seen an increase in the number of college graduates, homeowners, professionals, politicians and salaries – the list could go on. Despite these advances, African Americans cannot be blinded to the fact that the majority of high school drop outs are African Americans, just as many Black males who enroll in college end up locked up and only a small percentage of African Americans are in executive positions. Blacks have come a long way but are not there yet. DeShuna Spencer sees this business venture as a calling, her mission in life. Spencer wants Liu Karama to be the prominent, positive voice for the African American community that promotes empowerment and advocates change. She believes the African Americans need a publication, such as emPower that is solely dedicated to keeping the community informed on relevant topics. While in the barbershops and beauty salons, church events or community meetings, Blacks talk about “what’s wrong” all the time, but there is not a central location, a main hub for Blacks to discuss, become educated about and learn how to change issues. Liu Karama will fill that void.

“The need for a cutting-edge news magazine is greater than ever. It’s crucial that Black America have a publication that gives voice to the crucial issues and developments in these troubled times. The mainstream news magazines may touch on these that are important to African Americans, but there is a need for a publication that gives full attention, and a swift kick when necessary, to decision makers and policies that impact Black community.” — Florestine Purnell, former managing editor of Emerge.
